Northwestern State University's 5th annual Demon Mathematics Classic for outstanding high school math students will be held Saturday, February 28th, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The registration deadline is Friday, February 13. The competition hosts top students from the central Louisiana area and students compete in two areas. First the students will take the Challenge Exam – a rigorous test covering topics from Precalculus to Geometry. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the challenge exam will receive a trophy. 1st place will also receive a TI Voyage calculator and NSU sweatshirt. 2nd and 3rd place will receive TI-89 titanium calculators. The second part of the competition is a team competition modeled after quiz bowl. Students compete in 4 quarters in each game. The first quarter consists of quick recall questions. The second is a lightning round of 10 questions for each team to be answered in 60 seconds. The third is a two-minute worksheet round. And, the fourth is a quick recall with bonus questions round. All questions are math related and the competition is face paced and fierce. 2007 winners were: 1st place Bolton High A Team coached by Lillian Cutshall, 2nd place Opelousas High A Team coached by Gale Prather, and 3rd place Opelousas High B Team coached by Gale Prather.
